Energy Efficient Boilers

Did you know that if you heat your home with a gas-fired boiler, it could account for over half of your annual energy bills? it goes without saying then that it’s important that your boiler is working efficiently and not wasting your money.

If your boiler was fitted in 1998 or earlier, it is probably G-rated for energy efficiency. This means that it is less than 70% efficient – or to put it another way, for every £100 you spend on heating, £30 disappears into thin air!

The good news is that if you do have a G-rated boiler, there is a good chance that you qualify for a grant to have it replaced for free. If you do qualify (you need to be in receipt of certain benefits), you will get a brand new, A-rated, condensing boiler through a scheme called “ECO Affordable Warmth”. The new boiler will be over 90% efficient, and according to the Energy Saving Trust you could save over £300 a year in energy bills by upgrading.

There’s a very good article about how condensing boilers work here, some information about getting a grant here, and some more facts & figures here.
